Having spent the last few decades leading teams of creatives, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of personality types.

Among the many leaders I’ve known, the best are those who actively listen to their team members to build consensus.

The engaged leader

Introverts on the team sometimes need encouragement to speak up and lead.

Extraverts may need to be coached on listening and inviting others to speak up.

Engaged leaders bring these needs to the surface so improvements can be made.

Following their intuition, engaged leaders treat colleagues with respect and patience, always assuming good intent.

This helps people feel appreciated, making them more eager to show up for their colleagues.

The autocratic leader

The personality type that seems to cause the most damage to teams is the autocrat.

These flawed leaders tend to demand fealty while avoiding honest feedback. This means they miss opportunities to build connected relationships at work.

By shining a light on the problem, we can hope to make a change, calling out the harmful behavior so it stops or is mitigated by the promotion of more engaged leaders.

This takes power and self-confidence, and people who speak up need to feel supported.

Whether leading a team at work, building a new business, or organizing a community event, leaders need confidence and techniques for upping their communication game, and tools for how to deal with bullies and autocrats.

Connectedness helps us thrive, and when we build relationships, we can find joy at work.
